Andy, Linda and Sheldon huddled on the frozen lake shore, clad in winter clothing, Linda wearing her figure skating outfit. They were staring in utter horror at a gaping hole in the ice, the water within still rippling from where their unfortunate companion had gone through. The water was dotted with small chunks of broken ice, and the snow falling heavily from the sky seemed anxious to cover the spot where the skater had vanished, as if to erase the accident. There was a deep, terrible silence, broken only by the whisper of the falling snowflakes. Suddenly an arm wrapped in sodden black leather shot out of the water, followed by a second, and Andy cried out in relief as he saw Yazoo’s head emerge from the frigid water. Yazoo managed to get himself onto his upper arms, scrabbling partly out of the numbing lake, his long white mane plastered to his face. The dripping water made the hair hanging before his green eyes resemble icicles. He reached up one hand to shove his wet hair out of his face, and stared at Andy with large, puzzled eyes. “Chip, I completely fail to see the fun in this sport.” |
